Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion in Your Content

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

Nelson Mandela

How are you showing up in your content?

Do you own your values upfront or are you hiding behind a veil of perceived acceptance? Are you a wall-flower or are you rockin’ out, experimenting with progressive, innovative, and potentially world-changing power moves?

On the dance floor of life, the side steppers don’t make ripples; they fade into the backdrop and carry-on with the status quo.

Is that who you want to be?

While intimately knowing and speaking to your ideal client is one of the main attributes of effective copy, creating impactful content can only be achieved with an open-minded objective toward a more inclusive, equal, and diverse audience.

This is not easy but like author Glennon Doyle so poignantly put it: We can do hard things.

It all starts with a drive to learn and a willingness to be proven wrong. It’s okay to not know everything; it’s okay to make mistakes; it’s okay to start the journey now - better late than never - but start, for the love of all things good!

The content and copy that you put into the world tell your audience what type of organization you run. It should ring true to your business values and establish a foundation of principles that contribute to the betterment of the world at large. No single person, in business or otherwise, makes too small of an impact not to consider the implications of the messages that they are putting out into the world.

Take the time to listen, read, and involve yourself in things that matter - and as you learn, share! Use your platform to spread kindness and love throughout the world. You are going to make mistakes - do it anyway and learn from it. Take messy action with an open heart and mind.

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good [people] to do nothing.”

Edmund Burke

It all comes back to being authentic to yourself and the importance of having a safe and supportive environment in which to do so. This domain includes but is definitely not limited to a person’s perception of themselves within the home, community, business, and the media at large. How we interact with the world around us creates not only our, but others’ environments, either deliberately or not. It is crucial that we are aware of this fact so that we can be more intentional about the various conditions that we help to create.

Incorporating your honest journey toward a more diverse, inclusive, and equal world within your content marketing strategy will encourage others to behave likewise. Normalizing this process of personal growth will encourage the same growth throughout all of humanity. How do you get the quiet room to dance? Start grooving to the music. Really lean into it because it feels right. Even if it looks a little awkward in the beginning, people will notice, join, and maybe even give a few insightful pointers along the way.

”Even when it’s not pretty or perfect. Even when it’s more real than you want it to be.

Your story is what you have, what you will always have.”

Becoming by Michelle Obama

The way we show up in the media has a direct impact on our businesses, communities, and families. Likewise, the way we show up as individuals will affect our families, communities, businesses, and the media. This connection can either make the bad, worse or the good, great!

Be a champion for positive change in the world.

Make ripples of kindness by being a leader in doing what is right.

Creating your content while being mindful of the verbiage used and the messages you are sending into the world can make an inspirational impression on your audience. Listen, read, get involved, and teach with an open mind and a kind heart. Be mindful to incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion in the content that you make but don’t fret over it. It doesn’t have to be scary - We can do hard things. Use your platform and leverage your digital marketing strategy by owning your journey and taking messy action - that’s the best way to learn, grow, and truly make an impact.

“Knowledge without action is meaningless.”

Abu Bakr
